PART A: RESEARCH AND TRAINING

Community radio is emerging to at a time the world is moving towards building knowledge societies and economies, in which knowledge workers and competitiveness will be major driving forces. To be relevant as engines of community development, CR must continuously seek understanding and satisfaction of the needs of their communities while possessing the appropriate human capital to meet the constant changes of the professional and technological environment.

But the reality in Nigeria up to this time is that media culture has not appreciated research as an essential part of its sectoral development while the scholarship constituency lacks appropriate motivation. Training institutions, ever increasing in number, lack the ability to connect skill-building in the classroom with the workplace, having been hamstrung by absence of modern broadcasting facilities.

WAY FORWARD

The foregoing represent key issues on which community radio stakeholders have been generating and sharing ideas. We believe that now is the time to address the challenges so that an appropriate environment and a sustainable CR sector will emerge in Nigeria. Our demands are in the pages which follow.
